Gemini 3.8 Flash ships while the Pro line stays frozen at 3.1
Google released Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber, calling it its most intelligent workhorse model yet. The Pro flagship has not moved since February.
Google announced Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber, describing the release as “our most intelligent workhorse model yet, built for long-horizon coding and autonomous agents”. Gemini 3.8 Live and 3.8 Live Extended Thinking followed on the same line.
The structural fact underneath the announcement matters more than the model itself: the Flash tier has now advanced through 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 and 3.8 since May 2026, while the Pro tier has not moved since Gemini 3.1 Pro on 19 February 2026.
A workhorse tier that keeps shipping while the frontier tier stands still is the pattern you would expect if the frontier team were holding for a generational release. It is circumstantial, but it is first-party and verifiable — which is more than can be said for most Gemini 4 reporting.
