What is actually known about Gemini 4
Strip out the aggregator churn and the verifiable picture is small. Google has said nothing. One internal checkpoint appears to have escaped in mid-September 2026, and a handful of specifications were read off it. Everything else is inference.

The Pro line has been frozen for 7 months
This is the strongest structural argument that something big is coming. Google's Pro tier — its frontier model — has not moved since Gemini 3.1 Pro on 19 February 2026. Meanwhile the Flash tier shipped 3.5, 3.6, 3.7 and 3.8 releases straight through the same period, ending with Gemini 3.8 Flash on 2 September 2026, which Google itself called its "most intelligent workhorse model yet".
A workhorse tier that keeps advancing while the frontier tier stands still is the shape you would expect if the frontier team were holding back for a generational jump rather than a point release. Set against Gemini's own history, the current gap is an outlier:
