Reports describe Google having produced a first internal checkpoint for the model expected to ship as Gemini 4 Pro, with a public release attached to October 2026 and a smaller Flash-Lite plus Nano Banana 2 Lite refresh expected sooner.
The same reporting carries the claim that a Gemini 3.5 Pro was shelved, which is the origin of the expectation that the Pro line skips to 4 outright.
What this establishes: that training work on a next Pro flagship is far enough along to produce a shareable snapshot.
What it does not establish: a release date, a name, or any specification that will survive to launch. Checkpoints are training snapshots. Google has reportedly shelved a Pro-tier model already this cycle, which is itself the reason the version number jumped.
